A recent incident at Pune’s Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE) has sparked controversy, as a banner meant to promote democratic expression was defaced, drawing ire from the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).
The banner, titled ‘Democracy Wall’, displayed logos of GIPE, the Election Commission of India (ECI), and the Government of India. Its purpose was to encourage students to voice their opinions ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

However, the banner was vandalized, with the word ‘Democracy’ crossed out using spray paint. In its place, ‘NOTA (None of the above)’ was boldly written alongside ‘Inquilab Zindabad’ in Devanagari script.
Anil Thombre, State Minister of ABVP, condemned the act, labeling the banner as “anti-national” and “anti-democracy.” He criticized the administration for not taking action despite the poster being on display for several days.

Moreover, the ABVP is going to hold a strong agitation if action is not taken against those behind this. At the same time, we will complain to the ECI and file a complaint with the police.”

The defacement of the banner has raised concerns about freedom of expression and political neutrality on college campuses. It has also highlighted tensions surrounding the upcoming elections. ABVP’s threat of agitation adds to the growing controversy, as stakeholders debate the appropriate response to such incidents.
