Pune Municipal Corporation Issues Fire Safety Mandate for Commercial and Private Buildings

In response to a recent uptick in fire incidents, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has issued a stringent warning to commercial establishments, malls, high-rise buildings, private schools, and offices.

They are mandated to conduct a comprehensive fire safety audit and submit the report by March 31, with severe repercussions for non-compliance. Failure to adhere to the directive will result in the discontinuation of water supply, with potential legal actions under the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act, 2006.

The PMC emphasizes the criticality of fire safety measures, necessitating twice-yearly submissions of Form-B certificates from designated agencies to the chief fire officer. Buildings failing to comply risk suspension of essential services like water and electricity supply, as outlined in the Act’s provisions.

Furthermore, private buildings are urged to ensure the functionality of firefighting equipment and cooperate with PMC fire brigade efforts. Building owners and occupants are reminded of their legal obligations under the Act to implement and maintain fire prevention measures.

Devendra Potphode, PMC’s chief fire officer, underscores the urgency of these measures, stressing the March 31 implementation deadline. Failure to comply may lead to severe consequences, including disconnection of essential services, highlighting the paramount importance of fire safety in the face of increasing risks.
