Pune: After a three-year legal battle, Dr. Avinash Phatak, 72, and his wife Madhuri Phatak, 67, have finally got back possession of their home in Bibwewadi, Pune. The tenant, who had refused to pay rent or vacate the property, has agreed to leave the house by April 30 and attend a court hearing on April 5.

The couple had been fighting for their home for the past three years, but their efforts seemed to have been in vain as the tenant refused to cooperate and even skipped court hearings. However, on March 29, the elderly couple staged a protest, which caught the attention of the Pune Pulse, and eventually escalated the matter.

With the help of MNS leader Vasant More and MLA Madhuri Misal, the tenant was called for a meeting and convinced to give the house back to the Phatak couple.

“The tenant was given relief from paying the past rent and has to be present for the court hearing. After which, he will empty the house and then the case will be taken back,” said Supriya Argade, the couple’s daughter.

MNS leader Vasant More added, “On explaining the person, he agreed to give the rent, but the trust issue would again come up, so we decided to give the house back to them. And the old couple has also agreed to decide to not take the pending rent from them.”

The Phatak couple expressed their gratitude to everyone who helped them in their fight for justice. They can finally rest easy, knowing that they will soon be able to move back into their home after a long and arduous legal battle.
