150 Tourists from Maharashtra Stranded in Nepal Amid Violent Protests
Most stuck travelers from Thane; Indian Embassy urges caution, issues helpline numbers
Amid escalating protests in Nepal led by Gen Z youth against the government, around 150 tourists from Maharashtra have been stranded as flights and road transport remain suspended for the second consecutive day. According to the State Disaster Management Cell, all the tourists are safe and currently staying in hotels in Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Purang.
Of the stranded tourists, 65 are from Thane district, 10 from Akola, 6 from Mumbai, 5 from Pune, 2 from Latur, 1 each from Yavatmal and Kolhapur, while the details of others are still being confirmed. Additionally, 12 of them are Kailash Mansarovar pilgrims stuck in Kurang province near the China border. Eleven tourists from Beed managed to reach Uttar Pradesh safely by bus.
The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu has appealed to citizens to remain indoors, follow local administration guidelines, and avoid venturing onto the streets. An advisory has also been issued asking Indians to “defer travel” to Nepal until the situation stabilises. Flight services in Nepal are likely to resume by Friday, raising hopes of safe evacuation. Meanwhile, the India-Nepal border at Sonauli in Uttar Pradesh’s Maharajganj district witnessed an influx of Indian tourists returning early due to unrest.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar confirmed that the state government is coordinating with the Union Ministry of External Affairs, the Indian Embassy, and Maharashtra Sadan to provide assistance. The State Emergency Operation Center has urged citizens to rely only on official sources for information and avoid rumors.
Nepal President Ram Chandra Paudel has appealed to protesters to seek a peaceful resolution through dialogue.
