70-Year-Old Pune Woman Chases And Nabs Chain Snatcher Despite Walking With Cane
Pune: A 70-year-old woman, despite recovering from knee surgery and relying on a cane, chased down a chain snatcher, caught him, and handed him over to the police, proving that determination knows no age.
The incident occurred on February 25 in Shivajinagar when Sunanda Dattu Bodke, a house help, was walking home from Wadarwadi around 4:30 PM. The accused, Shankar Mahadu Mohan, was sitting by the roadside and, after spotting Bodke, began following her. As he got close, he snatched her gold chain and tried to flee.
Instead of panicking, Bodke raised an alarm and pursued him, managing to grab his shirt from behind. Her shouts attracted passersby, who rushed to help. Initially, Mohan denied any wrongdoing, and upon frisking, the stolen chain was not found. Later, he admitted to throwing it away during the commotion.
The Shivajinagar police have registered a case and are continuing their investigation. Authorities estimate the gold chain’s value at ₹1 lakh.
Pune has witnessed a rise in chain snatching incidents in recent weeks, with 21 reported cases in the past fortnight. While some culprits have been arrested, others remain at large, prompting increased vigilance from both police and citizens.
