Constitution Day in India, known as Samvidhan Divas, is observed annually on November 26. This significant date marks the moment in 1949 when the Indian Constitution was adopted by the Constituent Assembly. The Constitution came into force on January 26, 1950, signifying the birth of India as a sovereign and democratic republic.

This occasion pays tribute to the core values of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity enshrined in the Constitution. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, who chaired the Drafting Committee, is celebrated as the chief architect of this foundational document.

Constitution Day pays tribute to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar while enhancing understanding of constitutional values, rights, and responsibilities. The Indian Constitution holds the distinction of being the longest-written constitution globally, comprising 117,360 words in its English version.

This year, the date also marks the 133rd birth anniversary of Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar, who served as the chairman of the drafting committee of the Constituent Assembly and was instrumental in the formation of the Indian Constitution. Originally observed as Law Day, the Indian government officially designated this day as Constitution Day in 2015.

Constitution Day further emphasizes the principles of democracy, promoting engaged civic involvement and accountability. It acts as a reminder of India’s dedication to fostering a progressive, inclusive, and fair society for every citizen.

In a significant milestone, a statue of Dr. Ambedkar is scheduled to be unveiled at the Supreme Court of India. President Droupadi Murmu will officially inaugurate the 7-foot-tall statue, which is mounted on a 3-foot base, at 10:30 AM this Sunday. The event will be streamed live for public viewing.

After gaining independence, India tasked a committee led by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar with the responsibility of drafting its Constitution. Dr. Rajendra Prasad, who served as the first President of India, presided over the Constituent Assembly formed in 1946.

By early 1948, Dr. Ambedkar had finalized the draft of the Indian Constitution and submitted it to the Constituent Assembly. The draft was adopted on November 26, 1949, with minimal amendments. The Indian Constitution officially came into force on January 26, 1950, a date now celebrated as Republic Day.
