An eight-year-old boy from Kirkedwadi, Pune, has returned to school with a prosthetic arm after surviving a life-changing fight with Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS). His journey from paralysis to the classroom is being seen as a story of courage and determination.

The boy first fell ill in February this year and was admitted to Navale Hospital. What began as weakness in his legs soon progressed to paralysis, forcing doctors to shift him to the ICU and place him on a ventilator. He was treated with intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) therapy, a standard treatment for GBS, but developed a severe infection in his right hand during the course. The infection spread rapidly, and doctors were left with no option but to amputate his hand at the wrist.

Despite the trauma, he never gave up. Recently fitted with a prosthetic arm, he has been relearning basic activities such as writing and is now back in school. On Independence Day, he hoisted the national flag in front of his classmates and teachers, a moment that left many deeply moved. “Even after everything he’s been through, he came to school on August 15 to raise the flag. His willpower is something we can all admire,” said one of his teachers.

Local leaders and community members have also rallied around the family. Former sarpanch Narendra Hagawane, who has been supporting them since the beginning, expressed concern over the medical complications. “I believe the amputation could have been avoided with better care, but the boy has shown extraordinary bravery in returning to school and adapting to his new hand,” he said.

His father, Tanaji Bagade, recalled the ordeal with pain but also pride. “Watching him suffer and lose his hand was heartbreaking. But he has focused again on his studies. We will support him in every way to ensure he has a bright future.”

For this young boy, what could have ended in despair has become a new beginning. With the support of his family, teachers, and community, he is learning to move forward—turning his loss into a lesson in resilience for everyone around him.
