Pune MPCB Issues Orders To Bavdhan Developer Over Dumping Untreated Sewage In Ramnadi
The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB),Pune office has issued an interim directions to a private developer in Bavdhan Khurd for allegedly dumping untreated sewage in Ramnadi.The developer has been instructed to complete the compliance for avoiding the legal consequences according to the officials.The issue was propagated on 11 th May 2024 as per a report under the title of “Citizens complaining about developer dumping sewage in Ramnadi”,which inclusively highlighted the developer’s allegedly use of private tankers to dump untreated sewage in the river near Bavdhan Khurd. The news also undertook complaints and responses from the localites regarding the illegal disposal.
According to the officials the MPCB has involved Section 33 A of the Water( Prevention and Control of Pollution)Act, 1974 and Section 31 A of the Air(Prevention and Control of Pollution)Act, 1981, to issue directions and the sub-regional officer has proposed legal actions against the developer.
J.S. Salunkhe, regional officer MPCB, Pune, stated ”The developer has been asked to submit a report of action taken as per the directions within 15 days failure to comply with it will attract legal actions.”
The pollution board has asked the developer to operate a sewage treatment plant to achieve requisite standards and stop discharge of waste outside the premises. Besides, it brought up the developer to regularly an ozonation system to disinfect the sewage before treatment. The treated water from the STP should be used for secondary purposes such as flushing and gardening as stipulated by MPCB regulations. As part of the compliance, the builder has been directed to submit a fresh bank guarantee of 50,000 to MPCB within 15 days.
The case has drawn attention to the broader issue of environmental degradation in Pune, which reiterates the importance of natural resources in day today life with citizens and environmentalists spontaneous awakening for stricter enforcement of pollution control measures to protect local water bodies like Ramnadi.
