Unseasonal Rain To Persist Across Maharashtra, Yellow Alert Issued In Several Districts

Pune city experienced widespread moderate rains on Friday evening, just ahead of the Dussehra festival. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the city recorded 18.2 mm of rainfall between 7 pm and 8 pm.

The rains came as a surprise, as the monsoon had shown signs of withdrawing from Maharashtra after leaving the Nandurbar district on October 6. However, the withdrawal process was stalled by a new weather system forming near the Maharashtra coast.

This low-pressure system has developed over the east-central Arabian Sea and adjoining the Maharashtra coast. Due to this, the state is now experiencing widespread light to moderate rainfall, which is expected to continue for the next two to three days, according to IMD officials.

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for several districts in the state, including Pune. For Pune, the yellow alert is in place until October 13, with light to moderate rainfall predicted until October 15.

Mumbai is expected to have thunderstorms over the next 24 hours and a yellow alert has been issued for the same.

The sudden showers caused inconvenience to roadside vendors selling marigold flowers and apta leaves, both commonly used during the Dussehra celebrations.

Many vendors were seen rushing to protect their goods from the rain, with some reporting damage.

Waterlogging in certain areas also led to traffic congestion, adding to the disruption caused by the unexpected rain.

With more rain expected in the coming days, the IMD has advised residents to stay alert and take precautions, especially in areas prone to waterlogging.
