Mission Brain Attack Launched in Pune to Tackle Brain Stroke Crisis with Timely Treatment and Awareness
In a bid to tackle India’s growing brain stroke epidemic, ‘Mission Brain Attack’ has been launched in Pune.
The initiative aims to provide timely treatment to patients, with a focus on raising awareness about symptoms and risk factors. According to Dr. Nirmal Surya, President of the Indian Stroke Association, three people suffer from a stroke every minute, making it the third leading cause of death.
Every year, 18 lakh people in India suffer from brain strokes, yet only one in four people is aware of its symptoms. This lack of awareness often delays treatment, exacerbating the condition. Dr. Surya emphasized that brain strokes are often caused by high blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol. Individuals with a family history of these disorders are more likely to inherit them genetically.
To prevent brain strokes, Dr. Surya stressed the importance of controlling weight and cholesterol, and avoiding alcohol and tobacco. Recognizing brain stroke symptoms is also vital for timely treatment. These symptoms include body balance issues, temporary sight loss, crooked face, weakness in arms and legs, and impaired speech.
Timely treatment is crucial in reducing the risk of brain stroke patients. Dr. Arvind Sharma, Secretary of the Indian Stroke Association, highlighted the importance of urgent treatment using advanced procedures like thrombolysis and mechanical thrombectomy. These treatments reduce patient risk and facilitate quicker recovery.
In a significant development, mechanical thrombectomy, an effective but expensive treatment option, will soon become more affordable. Domestic manufacturing of required hardware and catheters is set to begin, making this procedure accessible to all.
‘Mission Brain Attack’ is being implemented across the country, receiving a positive response in Pune. The initiative involves training not only neurologists but also other doctors in brain stroke treatment. By raising awareness and providing timely treatment, this mission aims to reduce the impact of brain strokes in India.
