Heavy Vehicle Accidents in Pune: 'Have We Forgotten Humanity?' Father Demand Justice"
Recent incidents involving heavy vehicles in Pune have raised serious concerns about road safety. Families of the victims are demanding justice and are frustrated by the apparent lack of accountability in these cases.
Suresh Manwani, whose daughter Arti was killed by a concrete mixer, lamented, “Have we forgotten humanity? What is justice?” He expressed his dismay over the quick bail granted to the accused. Meanwhile, Shrikant Amrale, whose wife Geetanjali died in a tempo accident, shared his grief, stating, “My world has shattered. My children have lost their mother. No one can replace a mother’s love. The drunk tempo driver should be punished, but my family will never get back our loved one.”
In response to these tragedies, citizens have voiced their opinions. A person from Kothrud proposed that heavy vehicles should have unique lighting, drivers should receive thorough training and experience before obtaining licenses, and they should wear ID cards and uniforms. While another called for stricter laws against drunk driving, improved street lighting, and regular maintenance of roads. Another user suggested limiting heavy vehicle traffic to the hours of 9-11 pm and conducting regular checks on driver’s documents and alcohol consumption.
Residents of Narhe village have also expressed their worries about the movement of heavy vehicles related to quarries, construction, and industrial activities. They attribute the rise in accidents to encroachments and a lack of action from local authorities, urging for intervention from the administration.
Residents of Pune are increasingly worried about heavy vehicles, such as cement mixers and dumpers, operating without restrictions, even during busy hours, which endangers public safety. They are questioning why builders and transporters appear to be given preferential treatment.
A retired police officer has suggested that sharing photos of offending vehicles on social media could encourage police action. Others are calling for stricter enforcement and investigations into possible collusion between drivers and local authorities.
Citizens have proposed several solutions, including reporting heavy vehicles to the Pune traffic police through a dedicated app, installing CCTV cameras to monitor and penalize reckless drivers, increasing the presence of traffic police in areas like Hadapsar and Chandannagar, and imposing fines on drivers who travel in the wrong direction.
