Lawrence Bishnoi Offered Candidacy For Maharashtra Elections: UBVS Compares Him To Bhagat Singh
Jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi has been extended an unexpected offer to contest the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections by the political party Uttar Bharatiya Vikas Sena (UBVS). Registered with both the Election Commission of India and Maharashtra State Election Commission, the UBVS is pushing for Bishnoi to represent them, citing his Punjabi heritage and comparing him to Shaheed Bhagat Singh.
In a letter penned by UBVS national president Sunil Shukla, the party expressed pride in Bishnoi’s North Indian roots and its commitment to championing the rights of North Indians living in Maharashtra. The party has already finalized four candidates to run in Mumbai, and if Bishnoi agrees, they plan to announce a list of 50 candidates.
Shukla highlighted the marginalization of North Indians in Maharashtra, particularly those from Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttarakhand, who have been denied reservations due to their ancestry despite being born and raised in the state.
Bishnoi, who is currently imprisoned in Gujarat’s Sabarmati Central Jail, gained national attention due to his criminal activities, including his involvement in the murder of singer Sidhu Moosewala and alleged threats to Bollywood star Salman Khan. Despite being incarcerated, his influence continues to be felt both in India and abroad.
