Firecracker Stalls Flood Pune Streets, Sparking Resident Outrage Over Safety Violations
The festive season has brought chaos to Pune’s streets as firecracker stalls have mushroomed across the city, causing inconvenience to commuters and pedestrians. The stalls, many without licenses, have obstructed footpaths and narrow streets, disrupting daily life.
Residents are frustrated with the annual disruption, which follows similar issues caused by seasonal vendors. “It’s becoming impossible to walk on the streets,” said Sunil Koloti, a Undri resident. Stalls have come up at busy junctions, in close proximity to high tension poles of MSEDCL. Who have given them the sanctions of putting up stalls at such locations which may cause a big disaster and also fuels congestion.
“I struggle to walk my dog due to these stalls and vehicular traffic,” said Sonal Patel, an NIBM road resident. The lack of regulation has raised concerns about safety and accessibility. These stalls are a hazard, especially for senior citizens and children, said another resident.
Residents demand stricter action from authorities, seeking relocation of stalls to open areas, proper licensing, and safety measures to maintain pedestrian accessibility. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has begun cracking down on illegal stalls.
As Diwali approaches, residents and authorities must work together to balance festive spirit with public safety and convenience.
The PMC’s crackdown on illegal stalls is a step in the right direction, but residents await more decisive action to reclaim their city streets. With Diwali just around the corner, Pune’s residents hope for a safer, more convenient celebration.
