Following a devastating fire at an unauthorized firecracker warehouse in Vishrantwadi on October 25, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has swung into action against illegal firecracker stalls operating across the city. The incident highlighted the risks posed by these unauthorized stalls, prompting the PMC to take swift action.

Additional Commissioner Prithviraj B. P. has directed the Deputy Commissioner of anti encroachment, Somnath Bankar, to take immediate action against these unauthorized stalls. The PMC has identified 66 unauthorized stalls selling firecrackers in various locations, causing traffic congestion and blocking footpaths. These stalls pose a significant risk to public safety, and their removal is crucial to preventing potential disasters.

Every year, the PMC issues paid permissions for temporary firecracker stalls on municipal premises, charging rent at prevailing rates. Authorized stalls are mainly located on the riverside road behind Vartak Udyan in Narayan Pethe. However, the presence of unauthorized stalls has sparked concerns about safety and regulation.

The PMC has mandated specific regulations for firecracker stalls, including stock limits, location approval, and permission from the municipal fire department and eight zonal offices. Despite these regulations, unauthorized stalls continue to operate, putting public safety at risk.

The PMC’s efforts to regulate firecracker stalls are part of a broader initiative to ensure public safety during Diwali celebrations. With the festival set to begin, the corporation is racing against time to remove unauthorized stalls and prevent potential accidents.

To promote transparency and fairness, the PMC has introduced an online auction system for allocating firecracker stalls. This system has generated significant revenue for the corporation, with bidding for some stalls reaching ₹2 lakh.

As Diwali approaches, the PMC’s crackdown on unauthorized firecracker stalls is a welcome move to ensure public safety and prevent potential disasters. The corporation’s swift action serves as a reminder of its commitment to protecting citizens during the festive season.

The Additional Commissioner has ordered the Encroachment Removal Department to submit photos of the action taken against these stalls, ensuring accountability and transparency in the process. With the PMC’s proactive measures, Pune residents can look forward to a safer and more enjoyable Diwali celebration.
