Vantara Prepares to Welcome Three African Elephants from Tunisia for a Compassionate Retirement
Achtaum, Kani and Mina will soon arrive in India to enjoy a peaceful, enriched environment after years in captivity at Friguia Park.
In a heartwarming move towards animal welfare, Vantara Kendra, established under the guidance of Anant Mukesh Ambani, is set to welcome three African elephants, Achtaum, Kani and Mina from Friguia Park, Tunisia. The elephants, who were first transferred to Tunisia from Burkina Faso over two decades ago as four-year-olds, have lived in captivity for nearly 23 years. However, recent financial challenges at the Tunisian zoo led Friguia Park to seek a retirement arrangement that would offer the trio a compassionate, enriched lifestyle in their later years.
A recent assessment by Vantara’s veterinary team revealed that the elephants are in urgent need of specialized medical care. Achtaum suffers from a split tusk and molar infection requiring careful intervention, while Kani’s cracked nails likely due to extended exposure to hard surfaces will also require specialized attention. All three elephants are dealing with skin issues due to inadequate living conditions and diet, and the lack of proper ventilation in their concrete quarters has compounded these issues.
In preparation for their arrival, Vantara has created a vast, vegetation-rich enclosure featuring native flora, mud pools, and food enrichment setups, designed to mimic the elephants’ natural habitat. This setup aims to support their physical, psychological and social needs, giving Achtaum, Kani and Mina a chance to enjoy life in an environment reminiscent of their wild home. As African forest elephants, a species native to the tropical forests of Central and West Africa, the new surroundings in India will allow them to engage in natural behaviors and benefit from a diet more aligned with their species’ needs.
Soon to be transported by chartered flight, the elephants will start their new journey in India, where they’ll experience a life closer to nature. Vantara’s commitment to providing Achtaum, Kani and Mina with an enriched, compassionate retirement stands as a testament to the growing global movement toward ethical wildlife care and sets an inspiring example for future generations.
