Environmental issues are emerging as a central theme in Maharashtra’s election campaigns, with citizens increasingly calling for sustainable urban development over new infrastructure projects. Concerns about worsening air quality, polluted rivers, and traffic congestion have pushed communities across the state to prioritize green policies, urging candidates to address issues like preservation of green spaces, improved waste management, and sustainable transportation.

A recent social media interaction exemplified this trend when Shivajinagar’s BJP candidate, MLA Siddharth Shirole, asked residents for input on infrastructure improvements. Instead of new construction, constituents voiced a strong preference for preserving local greenery, especially the Vetal Tekdi hill. Many respondents advocated for reduced development, calling for cleaner roads, more public gardens, and safer spaces for pedestrians and children.

In Shivajinagar, Congress candidate Datta Bhairat has made the preservation of Vetal Tekdi a top priority, pledging to support the Vetal Tekdi Bachav Kruti Samiti in blocking projects that threaten the area’s ecosystem. Bhairat has opposed large infrastructure developments like the Balbharti-Paud Phata Road and the High Capacity Mass Transit Route, both of which could affect local green spaces.

Environmental preservation is also a key issue in other urban constituencies. In Bhosari, Nationalist Congress Party candidate Ajit Gavhane has laid out an ambitious agenda for a “Green City” with expanded green spaces, enhanced waste management, and Miyawaki-style afforestation projects. In Chinchwad, BJP’s Shankar Jagtap has promised measures to reuse 50% of household water, expand rainwater harvesting, and promote electric vehicles with solar-powered charging stations and eco-friendly street lighting.

Advocates and residents across Maharashtra are urging candidates to make environmental protection part of their manifestos and legal commitments. As urban constituencies throughout Maharashtra rally for eco-conscious policies, voters are signaling a need for candidates to embrace sustainable solutions that extend beyond election season. These demands reflect a growing awareness that environmental health is essential for urban development, with many residents expecting green promises to remain in focus long after the elections conclude.
