New Scam Alert: Fraudsters Impersonate Family Members to Trick Victims Into Sending Money. Click to stay safe
In recent weeks, a troubling new scam has emerged, where fraudsters are impersonating family members to trick unsuspecting individuals into sending money. These scammers often create a sense of urgency, claiming to be in dire situations that require immediate financial assistance. Scammers often impersonate close family friends and request money, claiming there is an emergency or some other reason.
While scams like fake job offers or stock market schemes are somewhat easier to recognize as fraudulent, these new types of scams where callers pose as close friends or family are more serious and dangerous. The tactics used by scammers in these calls resemble those reported worldwide, such as the “Hey Mom” scam, where scammers pretend to be children or parents in distress, urging the recipient to send money immediately. Recently, Hollywood even produced a film based on this concept. In the movie “Thelma,” an elderly woman is scammed after a caller informs her that her nephew was in an accident and urgently needed money for a medical procedure in a hospital.
Now, these scams are becoming quite prevalent in India as well.
To avoid scams, it’s crucial to stay alert since scammers can contact you through social media and have access to many phone numbers and names. This access may stem from data leaks that occur frequently in India, which can provide scammers with not only your contact information but also personal and family details. Here are some tips to protect yourself from scams:
1) Always verify the caller. If someone reaches out asking for money and claims to be a relative or friend, make sure to cross-check. For instance, I checked with my father to see if he actually had a friend making such a request. Scammers often create a sense of urgency to pressure you into making quick decisions.
2) Be careful with personal information: Never share your personal or financial details with someone you don’t know or trust, even if they seem familiar. If you get an unexpected request for money, especially from someone you haven’t heard from in a while, be cautious.
3) Trust your instincts. If something feels off or suspicious about a call or message, don’t hesitate to end the conversation.
4) With the increase in online scams, it’s more important than ever to stay informed about the latest fraud tactics. Discuss these issues with your family and friends to raise awareness and help everyone stay safe.
