The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has launched a crackdown on illegal constructions within its jurisdiction, registering six FIRs last month. The authority has also sent applications to register three more cases, which are expected to be filed soon.

According to Deepti Suryawanshi, joint commissioner of PMRDA, the owners of these illegal structures were issued stop work notices, but they continued with the construction activity, prompting the authority to take action. A majority of these structures are residential in nature.

The demolition drive against illegal structures was put on hold for two months due to a Supreme Court directive, which allowed action only against illegal structures on roads and water bodies. However, with the model code of conduct no longer in effect, the PMRDA has resumed its normal activities.

The authority acts on complaints received from citizens and takes action after providing an opportunity for the structure holders to explain their side of the matter. In cases where the structures can be regularized, permission is granted, but if they fall under a restricted zone or have other issues, they are demolished as per the rules.

PMRDA’s jurisdiction spans across nine talukas in the district, and many residents in rural or remote areas are unaware of the need to obtain permission from the authority. Instead, they register their new constructions with local gram panchayats and pay taxes, but this is not sufficient, as only PMRDA can grant construction permission within its limits.

The crackdown on illegal constructions is part of PMRDA’s efforts to ensure that development in the region is carried out in a lawful and organized manner. With the authority resuming its normal activities, residents can expect more action against illegal constructions in the coming months.
