Pune, November 29, 2024: The mandatory helmet rule for pillion riders, as outlined under the Motor Vehicles Act, will not be strictly enforced within Pune city limits, clarifying confusion among residents. Newly elected Kasba Peth MLA Hemant Rasane confirmed that the enforcement of helmet requirements applies to highways and not to the city’s central areas.
Helmet Rule Clarification
Under the Motor Vehicles Act, both riders and pillion passengers on two-wheelers are required to wear helmets. However, with increasing road accidents and fatalities, the state’s Traffic Department directed strict enforcement of helmet rules. This led to speculation and concern among Pune’s residents about possible penalties within the city.
Rasane, after discussions with Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, assured residents that the rule is not being implemented for central city areas. “No such orders have been issued for enforcement in urban zones. The rule applies specifically to those traveling on highways,” said Commissioner Kumar. He also urged all commuters to adhere to helmet laws when traveling on highways for their safety.
