Pimpri-Chinchwad: A 40-year-old high-voltage transmission tower located on a busy road in Sahayog Nagar, Tathawade, will finally be removed to address long-standing traffic congestion. A monopole structure will replace the tower, requiring less space. The Standing Committee of Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has approved the tender for the project.

The move is expected to alleviate traffic bottlenecks between Sahayog Nagar and Triveni Nagar, bringing much-needed relief to residents. The persistent efforts of Bhosari MLA Mahesh Landge and former corporator Shantaram Bhalekar have been instrumental in making this possible.

The 220 kV high-voltage tower under PCMC’s ‘F’ regional office jurisdiction had posed a significant challenge for commuters in Ward No. 12, Tathawade. With Tathawade being a hub for industrial activity and IT parks, the population and traffic congestion have grown substantially over the years. Despite repeated warnings from the Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company Limited (MSETCL) to shut down the road due to safety concerns, technical constraints prevented its closure.

To resolve this issue, the existing tower will be relocated approximately 50 meters away using a compact monopole structure, freeing up 3 meters of space on either side of the road for smooth traffic flow. Former corporator Shantaram Bhalekar had earlier requested PCMC Commissioner Shekhar Singh to consider the monopole installation, while MLA Mahesh Landge consistently pursued the matter with the administration.

Following Landge’s directives, PCMC approved the necessary actions, and the Standing Committee sanctioned the tender. The work is expected to commence shortly, providing a long-term solution to the area’s traffic woes.

“With the rapid population growth in the Tathawade-Rupinagar area, the tower had become a significant obstacle, causing severe traffic congestion and increasing the risk of accidents for commuters. We strongly advocated for its removal, and thanks to MLA Mahesh Landge’s support, a monopole will now be installed, bringing great relief to residents.” said Shantaram Bhalekar, Former Corporator.
