The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has sought the expertise of IIT Bombay and COEP Technical University to conduct a structural inspection of 4,883 flats built under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) scheme. This move comes after numerous residents complained of shoddy construction and issues with ceilings, bathrooms, and toilet leakages in their new flats.

The flats, built for economically weaker sections and low-income groups, were handed over to beneficiaries last year. However, soon after possession, many residents started complaining of leakages, prompting PMRDA officials to direct developers to carry out repair works and impose a fine on the developer.

Rinaj Pathan, chief engineer at PMRDA, stated that although the structure is stable and safe, it’s essential to get it inspected by experts to ensure citizens’ safety. The inspection aims to identify whether developers compromised on material quality during construction. If found guilty, appropriate action will be initiated.

A total of 45 buildings, each with 11 floors comprising one and two-bedroom flats, have been built under the PMAY project on an area spread over around 52 hectares. PMRDA has directed developers to complete repair works before December 15.
