The Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg, commonly known as the Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway, is revolutionizing travel and connectivity within Maharashtra. This expressway reduces travel time between Mumbai and Nagpur from 15 hours to approximately 8 hours, passing through 10 major districts and benefitting an additional 14 districts through connecting highways.

Route and Infrastructure

Spanning 701 kilometers, the Samruddhi Mahamarg runs through Nagpur, Wardha, Amravati, Washim, Buldhana, Jalna, Aurangabad, Nashik, Ahmednagar, and Thane. It features 65 flyovers, 24 interchanges, six tunnels, and numerous pedestrian, vehicular, and cattle underpasses, ensuring smooth and efficient travel. Additionally, 26 toll booths regulate traffic and charges based on distance traveled.

The expressway enhances accessibility to major tourist attractions in Maharashtra, promoting regional tourism. Notable destinations connected include:

• Bibi ka Maqbara – 5 km

• Sula Vineyards – 8 km

• Trimbakeshwar Shiv Temple – 14 km

• Tansa Wildlife Sanctuary – 60 km

• Pench National Park – 95 km

• Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve – 124 km

Economic and Industrial Impact

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) is leading developments along the route, including 24 planned townships and Krushi Samruddhi Nagar to foster agro-industrial growth. The expressway is set to boost economic activity through improved connectivity to key trade hubs such as the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) in Mumbai and Nagpur’s Multimodal International Hub Airport (MIHAN).

The Samruddhi Mahamarg will also integrate with major expressways like the Nagpur-Gondia Expressway, Pune-Aurangabad Green Expressway, and the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor, facilitating EXIM trade and smoother freight movement across India.

Extensions and Future Plans

The Maharashtra government has proposed extending the expressway to cover additional districts, including Bhandara, Gondia, and Gadchiroli, under a second phase. Plans to link the route to Dahanu Port under the Sagarmala initiative are also underway, further strengthening Maharashtra’s role as a warehousing hub and boosting supply chain operations.
