D Gukesh Celebrates World Chess Championship Win With Bungee Jump
The 18-year-old Grandmaster conquers his fear of heights after making history as the youngest-ever world chess champion.
Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh celebrated his historic victory in the World Chess Championship by fulfilling a daring promise: conquering his fear of heights with a bungee jump. Days after defeating China’s Ding Liren to become the youngest world chess champion, Gukesh honored a pact with his trainer, Polish Grandmaster Grzegorz Gajewski, to take the leap if he secured the title.
Before leaving Singapore, Gukesh visited Skypark Sentosa and performed his first-ever bungee jump. Sharing the experience on X (formerly Twitter), he posted a video captioned, “I did it!” In the clip, Gukesh admitted feeling scared but expressed excitement about the adventure.
Gukesh’s victory in game 14 of the championship gave him a score of 7.5, surpassing Ding’s 6.5, making him the second Indian to win the title after Viswanathan Anand. He also broke Garry Kasparov’s record as the youngest world champion, describing the moment as the “best of his life.”
Ding Liren graciously acknowledged his defeat, calling it a fair result despite his earlier success in the tournament. He expressed no regrets, stating, “I played my best tournament of the year.”
Earlier this year, Gukesh made history by winning the 2024 FIDE Candidates Chess Tournament, becoming the youngest-ever challenger to the world title. His achievements have garnered widespread admiration, with fans flooding his bungee jump video with praise:
• “You did it. You made us all proud.”
• “This is nothing compared to what you did for us! Cheers, Gukesh!”
• “You Dreamed It And Made It Come True. Much Respect.”
Gukesh’s fearless leap both on the chessboard and from the Skypark Sentosa, cements his legacy as a champion who isn’t afraid to take risks.
