In a bittersweet moment for book lovers in Pune, the Books Meridian Library has bid adieu to its patrons after a remarkable 14-year journey. This beloved library, once a treasure trove of over 18,000 books, has closed its doors, leaving behind a legacy of fostering a love for reading and learning.

As the library’s owner, Dheeraj Kothari, reflected on the closure, he shared his thoughts with Pune Pulse. “In this era of digitalization, people should not think twice about paying ₹50 to ₹100 more for a library subscription. We spend small amounts on livelihood without realizing, but a library subscription is an investment in ourselves.”

Kothari attributed the closure to the challenges of managing the library alongside their other business ventures. “We decided to close the library while it was still running well. We couldn’t devote the time required to maintain its standards.”

As the library prepared to close, it offered its vast collection at a minimum 80% discount, a final gesture of appreciation for its loyal patrons. Kothari’s parting message to readers was one of responsibility: “Maintain the quality and condition of books, return them on time, and be a responsible civic citizen. These small actions will ensure that libraries continue to thrive.”

Recalling the library’s 14-year journey, Kothari said, “It’s been an unforgettable and memorable journey. Meridian Library was one of the private libraries in India with a beautiful collection of books that satisfied most readers.” At its peak, the library had thousands of members, with a monthly fee of ₹400.

The closure of Books Meridian Library is a loss for Pune’s literary landscape, particularly as the city celebrates its literacy festival and hosts the Pune Book Festival. As Kothari poignantly noted, “On one hand, Pune is celebrating literacy, and on the other, libraries like ours are shutting down. It’s a difficult time for books and libraries.”

As the city bids farewell to Books Meridian Library, book lovers and literati are urged to come forward and support the preservation of Pune’s literary heritage. The memories of Books Meridian Library will live on, inspiring future generations to cherish the joy of reading and the importance of libraries in our community.
