We Really Don’t Get Civic Sense’ – NRI Shares Experience with Loud Indian Family on Finland Train
An NRI traveling on a tranquil train in Finland expressed his frustration regarding a boisterous Indian family that left their cabin doors ajar while engaging in a video call. He took to social media to voice his concerns about their apparent disregard for ‘civic sense,’ which elicited a variety of responses from the audience. Some users suggested that direct communication would be a more effective way to resolve the situation.
Gokul Sridhar (@gokul) recently tweeted about his experience in a train compartment where he was accompanied by various passengers, including an Indian family. He characterized the carriage as “remarkably peaceful” until the family conversed loudly in Hindi and kept their cabin doors ajar. Gokul conveyed his irritation, noting that there seems to be a frequent absence of “civic sense” among some individuals.
“I’m on a train from Lapland to Helsinki and there’s one family in the otherwise ULTRA QUIET carriage that’s being very loud, talking to someone over a video call. In Hindi. With their cabin doors open. We REALLY don’t get civic sense, do we?”

We REALLY don't get civic sense, do we?
Sridhar may have believed that his time with the family would be limited to the train journey, but he was mistaken. He later shared in the comments of his post that he unexpectedly found himself at the same restaurant as the family, who were once again conversing loudly with someone, this time without the use of headphones.
“6 hours after the train ride… Same family behind me in the restaurant we are at. Same video call without headphones. Good lord. XD,” says the user.
The post has garnered over 12,000 views, and the comments reflect a range of reactions. Many supported his views and shared similar experiences. One such comment is, “Same in Manc. I’m on a train to London on the quiet coach trying to get some sleep. Guess who’s talking on their phone loudly in the QUIET COACH”, says a user.
“And you chose to post on X rather than educating them to be quiet. Might be their first time on foreign land and out of excitement.. as a concerned Indian you must have told them the etiquettes politely.. posting on X will not improve the situation,” says another user.
