Pune, December 28: Senior journalist, former president of the Pune Working Journalists’ Union and Pune Press Club, and retired HoD of Savitribai Phule Pune University’s Department of Communication and Journalism (Ranade), Dr. Kiran Thakur, passed away this morning at the age of 77 after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife, two sons, daughters-in-law, and grandchildren. Dr. Thakur was also the brother of Bharati Thakur, founder of Narmadalaya.

Dr. Thakur, who had been unwell for the past week, was admitted to a private hospital in Pune due to fatigue and passed away this morning. As per his wishes, his body was donated.

A Brief Profile
Dr. Thakur had a career spanning over three decades in journalism. He worked as a sub-editor for Pune Daily, as a correspondent for the United News of India (UNI), and contributed to periodicals like Indian Post and The Observer of Business and Politics.

In 2001, he transitioned into academia, joining Savitribai Phule Pune University as a professor in the Department of Communication and Journalism. From 2001 to 2007, he initiated various projects and promoted new research in the field. His PhD research focused on the web editions of Indian newspapers. He also authored several books, including Newspaper English and Handbook on Print Journalism.

Post-retirement, Dr. Thakur served as an honorary professor at institutions like Ahmedabad’s Mudra Institute of Communication and Research, FLAME University, and Vishwakarma University. He also contributed to the Indian Institute of Journalism’s Nanasaheb Parulekar Journalism Departmen at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan.
