The Maharashtra government’s decision to abolish the non-agricultural (NA) tax has left residents confused as demand notices continue to be issued due to a lack of clear guidelines.

The Eknath Shinde-led cabinet announced the abolition of NA tax in October 2024, fulfilling a long-pending demand of housing societies. However, no government resolution (GR) has been issued yet, leaving local authorities unclear on how to proceed.

The NA tax, introduced during the British era, is levied on properties within municipal corporation and council limits. While the cabinet decision was seen as a relief for property owners, the absence of instructions has led local talathi offices to continue issuing tax notices.

In Wakad’s Riddhi Siddhi Heights Society, a resident reported receiving a demand notice despite the tax being scrapped. The resident said their society has regularly paid the tax and was surprised to get the notice this year as well as Reported by TOI.

Officials clarified that in the absence of guidelines from the government or district collectorate, the standard collection procedure will continue. Notices for the NA tax are typically sent in August, with the recovery process running until March.

The decision to abolish the tax aimed to reduce financial burdens on housing societies, but its implementation has been delayed. Without a GR, confusion persists among property owners and local offices.

Residents and officials alike are urging the government to issue clear instructions to halt tax collection and ensure smooth execution of the policy. For now, property owners remain frustrated as demand notices continue to arrive despite the cabinet’s announcement.
