Pune: Measures to include a new flyover, six-lane road completion, and CCTV surveillance to ease congestion in Pune’s IT hub

The Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) has rolled out an ambitious plan to revamp road infrastructure in the bustling Hinjewadi IT hub of Pune. With a proposed budget of Rs 650 crore, key projects include widening existing roads, constructing a four-lane flyover, and completing the pending six-lane road from Baner to Hinjewadi. This move aims to alleviate severe traffic congestion that has plagued commuters, especially those working in the numerous IT companies in the area.

Hinjewadi, globally recognized for its IT Park, has witnessed immense development over the years. However, this progress is now overshadowed by persistent traffic jams, affecting thousands of employees and prompting some companies to relocate outside Maharashtra. Commuters often face delays of over an hour at critical junctions such as Lakshmi Chowk during peak hours.

As per reports by news agency TOI, State cabinet minister for industries Uday Samant, after assessing the traffic issues in December 2024, directed government bodies to expedite solutions. MIDC chief engineer Nitin Wankhede highlighted that road widening between Shivaji Chowk and Smashan Bhumi Chowk will cost Rs 25 crore, while the 5km state highway stretch toward Maan village will require an investment of Rs 584 crore. Both projects will commence once land acquisition is completed by the public works department.

A key element of the proposal is a 720-metre-long, four-lane flyover over Lakshmi Chowk, designed to bypass traffic bottlenecks at this critical point. Wankhede confirmed that the tendering process is nearing completion and construction is expected to begin soon. Additionally, the pending six-lane road between Baner and Hinjewadi, spanning 5.75 km, will be completed, with 2.5 km already operational. Land acquisition for the remaining stretch is being handled by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA).

Apart from road expansion, MIDC plans to bolster security and traffic management by installing 280 CCTV cameras across the IT Park at a cost of Rs 7 crore. Minister Uday Samant has also urged relevant authorities to address immediate issues such as potholes, dividers, and footpaths to enhance commuter safety and convenience.

As the ongoing metro construction in Hinjewadi progresses, traffic load on existing roads has worsened. Once metro services begin, commuters are expected to shift to the new transit system, potentially easing road traffic. The government’s proactive measures, combined with a focus on robust infrastructure, aim to restore seamless mobility in one of Pune’s most vital economic zones.
