Pune Resident Urges Police To Act Against Illegal Nylon Manjha Sales
Pune, January 4, 2025:
Jaymala Dhankikar, a BJP member and social worker from NIBM Annexe, in Pune has written a letter to the Pune Police Commissioner, urging immediate action to enforce the ban on nylon manjha. Despite a 2017 prohibition by the National Green Tribunal (NGT), the banned kite string continues to be sold and used in Pune, causing injuries and fatalities to both humans and birds.
In her letter, Dhankikar highlighted the alarming consequences of nylon manjha, citing the death of a Mumbai police officer in December 2023 and the recurring harm caused to birds. She stressed the urgent need for action to prevent further incidents.
Key Demands Made in the Letter:
- 1. Prosecution of Sellers:File cases against those found selling nylon manjha in Pune to deter illegal activities.
- 2. Special Drives: Conduct targeted drives in areas like NIBM Annexe, Mohammadwadi, Kondhwa, Undri, Hadapsar, and Wanawadi to seize nylon manjha and penalize offenders.
- 3. Awareness Campaigns: Launch public education initiatives to inform citizens about the dangers of nylon manjha and promote eco-friendly alternatives.
Dhankikar’s appeal underscores the need for stringent enforcement of the ban, emphasizing that public safety and wildlife protection must be prioritized.
When approached for a comment, she stated, “It is imperative to act now to save lives and prevent harm to our environment. I trust the Pune Police will take swift and effective action on this matter.”
The letter serves as a wake-up call for authorities to address the ongoing issue and reinforce the ban on nylon manjha in Pune.
