Pune: Software Manager From Mulshi Duped of ₹33.4 Lakh In Online Share Trading Scam
A 41-year-old software manager from Pune fell victim to a ₹33.4 lakh online share trading scam in May 2024. The fraudsters, posing as representatives of a reputed investment firm, lured her into transferring large sums of money with promises of high returns.
How the Scam Operated ?
Bavdhan Police Station revealed that the victim came across the investment scheme while browsing social media. She was contacted by a woman claiming to be an executive from a Kerala-based investment firm. The fraudsters persuaded her to invest through a link to a fraudulent mobile app.
Initially, the victim made small investments and received returns, which built her trust in the scheme. Encouraged, she invested larger amounts, totaling ₹33.4 lakh by May 25, 2024. When she attempted to withdraw her money, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming it was necessary to unlock her funds.
Police Swiftly Act
Realizing she had been duped, the victim filed an online complaint. The police too Registered her complaint.
Scam Strategy Exposed
The scammers employed a calculated three-step plan:
- Social Media Contact: They approached the victim with an investment offer.
- Fake Mobile App: They directed her to a counterfeit app for investments.
- Trust Building: By offering initial returns, they encouraged larger investments.
This incident underscores the growing prevalence of online financial scams. Authorities urge Pune residents to remain vigilant and verify the authenticity of investment opportunities and platforms before committing funds.
