Pune, January 15, 2025: A Fact-Finding Committee from the National Commission for Women (NCW) has arrived in Pune to investigate the brutal murder of a BPO employee by her colleague over a money dispute. The shocking incident occurred in the company parking lot in full view of bystanders, none of whom intervened—a stark example of the bystander effect.

The NCW took suo motu cognizance of the case, with Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar forming a special committee to investigate and recommend measures to prevent such incidents. The committee comprises Meenakshi Negi, Member Secretary, NCW; Dr. B.K. Sinha, former DGP, Haryana; and R. Sreelekha, former DGP, Kerala.

The team began its inquiry today and plans to:

  1. Meet with the Pune Police Commissioner, district authorities, and the investigating officer.
  2. Analyze how the crime occurred in a crowded area during daylight hours.
  3. Interact with the victim’s colleagues and friends for insights.
  4. Visit the crime scene to examine the circumstances of the attack.
  5. Engage with representatives of IT and BPO employee associations.

The NCW has directed the committee to submit its findings and recommendations within 10 working days to help address safety concerns for women in the workplace and public spaces.
