Maharashtra: Miraj Sitar Honored, Now On Indian Postage Stamp And Cover
Sangli: The world-renowned Miraj Sitar, a string instrument with deep cultural and historical roots in Western India, has been immortalized by the Indian Postal Department through the release of a special postage stamp and cover. The stamp, priced at ₹5, was officially unveiled during the MAHAPEX 2025 Festival of Stamps, held in Mumbai on Friday.
Event Highlights
The event was graced by prominent personalities, including Santoor maestro Pandit Satish Vyas, Deputy Director General (Philately) Sachin Kishore, Postmaster General Ramchandra Jaybhaye, and other dignitaries. The special cover features images of the Miraj Sitar, emphasizing its geographic and cultural significance, while the stamp depicts legendary sitarist Ustad Vilayat Khan playing the instrument.

A Legacy of Excellence
The Miraj Sitar, a prominent member of the lute family with seven main strings and up to 13 sympathetic strings, has earned global recognition for its craftsmanship and quality. Recently, it also received Geographical Indication (GI) status, further solidifying its importance.

Pride for Miraj
The local craftsmen of Miraj, who have upheld the tradition of making these exquisite sitars, celebrated this achievement. Representatives from the Miraj Musical Instrument Cluster, including Mohsin Mirajkar, Mubiin Mirajkar, and Altaf Pirjade, expressed pride in their contribution to this milestone.
The recognition is seen as a testament to the artistry and dedication of Miraj’s musical instrument makers, symbolizing a bridge between tradition and modernity.
