TRAI's Rs 20 Solution: Say Goodbye to Monthly Recharge Hassles for Your SIM.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has made a significant announcement that will benefit millions of mobile users by clarifying its rules regarding the deactivation of inactive prepaid SIM cards. This regulation, which has been in place for over ten years, ensures that SIM cards will not be deactivated as long as they have a minimum balance, even if they are not used for extended periods. Users can keep their SIM cards active by simply maintaining a minimum balance of Rs 20 in their accounts. Previously, users needed to recharge with a minimum amount, typically around Rs 199, every month to keep their SIM cards active, but this new rule removes that requirement for frequent recharges.

How does it work:

If you don’t use your SIM card for 90 days—meaning no calls, texts, data, or other services—it will be deactivated. However, if you have more than Rs 20 in your account after those 90 days of inactivity, Rs 20 will be automatically deducted, allowing your SIM card to stay active for an additional 30 days. This process will keep repeating as long as your balance remains at Rs 20 or more. If your balance drops below Rs 20, your SIM card will be deactivated. You can reactivate your number within 15 days of deactivation by recharging with Rs 20.

It’s important to note that this scheme is only applicable to prepaid connections. This new rule is expected to help many users, especially those who don’t use their phones often or only make occasional calls.
