Pune Reports Surge In Guillain-Barré Syndrome Cases; Public Health Department Issues SOP For Management
The Public Health Department has issued new guidelines for managing and monitoring Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) as Pune sees a rise in cases. On Thursday, the department directed district collectors across Maharashtra to implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to effectively manage the growing number of GBS patients.
As of Thursday, Pune reported three additional suspected GBS cases, bringing the total count to 130. The breakdown of the cases includes 25 patients from Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) areas, 74 from newly incorporated villages in PMC limits, 13 from Pimpri-Chinchwad, nine from rural Pune, and nine from other districts. Of these patients, 20 are currently receiving ventilator support, according to Dr. Babita Kamlapurkar, Joint Director of Health Services.
Supriya Sule Visits GBS-Affected Villages, Calls For Free Treatment and Pollution Control Measures
On Thursday, Supriya Sule, Member of Parliament from Baramati and NCP (SP) party leader, visited villages affected by the recent surge in Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases. During her visit, Sule expressed concern over the growing fear among residents and criticized the government for the increase in cases. She emphasized that the government must provide free treatment to all GBS patients, irrespective of their place of residence.
Sule announced that she would raise the issue in the upcoming district planning and development committee meeting, demanding that free treatment be extended to every patient. She stressed that this measure should not be limited by geographic boundaries.

Additionally, the MP highlighted the urgent need for a water treatment and filtration plant in the affected areas. She pointed out the increasing water and air pollution levels in Pune and nearby regions, which are contributing to the problem. “I have discussed this with the central minister, and they have assured me that a solution will be found,” she said. Sule also pledged to seek funds and expert assistance to tackle pollution and improve the region’s water quality.
