Infant Dies After Alleged Anesthesia Overdose During Ear Piercing Procedure

A six-month-old baby boy tragically passed away on Monday due to a suspected overdose of anesthesia at the Bommalapura Primary Health Centre in Gundlupet taluk, Chamarajanagar district.

According to reports, the infant’s parents, Anand and Shubha from Hangala village, took him to the health center for an ear-piercing procedure. Allegedly, the doctor administered anesthesia to both earlobes, after which the child lost consciousness.

The grieving parents have accused the doctor of negligence, claiming that he failed to follow proper medical protocols. They also alleged that he charged ₹200 for the procedure and have demanded his dismissal along with compensation for their loss, as reported by Udayavani.

Official Statement and Investigation

Dr. Aleem Pasha, the Taluk Health Officer, confirmed that anesthesia was administered to minimize pain during the procedure. “The child developed convulsions and, unfortunately, passed away. The exact cause of death will be determined after the post-mortem examination. If medical negligence is confirmed, a report will be sent to higher authorities for further action,” he stated.

Rising Concerns Over Anesthesia-Related Deaths

This case has reignited concerns over the risks associated with anesthesia during minor medical procedures. Last year, a seven-year-old boy, Adan Michael, died in Hyderabad due to an alleged overdose of anesthesia during throat surgery at a private hospital, as reported by The Hindu. Similarly, a four-year-old boy in Malappuram lost his life under comparable circumstances.

Authorities have now launched an investigation into the Bommalapura incident to determine whether proper medical protocols were followed. The tragedy has once again underscored the urgent need for stricter regulations and oversight in administering anesthesia, particularly in non-critical procedures.
