A new expressway connecting Bengaluru and Mangaluru via Hassan is set to significantly reduce travel time between the two cities by 7 to 8 hours. The project, spearheaded by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), is being developed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) in collaboration with the Karnataka Public Works Department. Spanning 335 km, the expressway will feature four to six lanes, with construction expected to commence in 2028.

Improved Connectivity and Faster Travel

The expressway is designed to enhance transportation efficiency in the region, particularly by providing a more reliable alternative to the existing route, which often faces disruptions due to landslides and weather-related issues during monsoons. Once operational, the high-speed corridor will offer a smoother and quicker commute between Bengaluru and Mangaluru.

The ministry had invited bids in July to appoint a consultant for preparing a detailed project report (DPR). By November, nine firms had submitted their technical proposals. The government aims to award the contract next year, giving the selected firm 540 days to complete the DPR.

Infrastructure Boost for Karnataka

The expressway will pass through Hassan and is expected to ease traffic congestion, enhance road safety, and boost connectivity between key cities in Karnataka. Improved road infrastructure is anticipated to facilitate economic growth by streamlining transportation for commuters and businesses.

Last week, Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar acknowledged the traffic congestion challenges in Bengaluru, stating that resolving them within the next two to three years would be extremely difficult. He remarked that even divine intervention might not be sufficient to address the issue in such a short timeframe.
