In a stunning display of skill and determination, Virat Kohli has made history by becoming the fastest player to reach the incredible milestone of 14,000 runs in One Day Internationals (ODIs). He achieved this remarkable feat during the intense Champions Trophy match against Pakistan, needing only 15 runs to hit the mark. Kohli celebrated his achievement with a boundary off Haris Rauf, solidifying his reputation as one of the greatest players in the fifty-over format.

Kohli’s achievement is even more remarkable considering how quickly he reached this milestone. He did it in only 287 innings, surpassing the previous record set by the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, who took 350 innings to achieve the same. The only other player to have crossed this impressive mark is Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara.

While Tendulkar still holds the record for the most runs in ODIs, totaling 18,426, Kohli is getting closer to Sangakkara’s overall score of 14,234. With one more match left in India’s Champions Trophy group stage against New Zealand, and possibly two additional matches if India qualifies for the semi-finals and finals, Kohli has a chance to surpass Sangakkara and become the second-highest run-scorer in ODI history.

Kohli also achieved his 51st ODI century in the match, with his boundary marking both his hundred and India’s winning runs, as he reached the milestone in just 111 balls. With this innings against Pakistan, he matched Tendulkar’s record for the most scores of 50 or more in ICC tournaments, totaling 23.

Since making his ODI debut in 2008, Kohli has played in 299 matches in the fifty-over format. During the 2023 World Cup, he surpassed Tendulkar’s long-held record for the most centuries in ODIs by scoring his 50th century in the semi-final against New Zealand.

In recent months, Kohli has faced challenges in finding his form, particularly in Test cricket. However, upon returning to ODIs earlier this month, he managed to score a half-century against England in a bilateral series, although he was dismissed quickly in India’s Champions Trophy opener against Bangladesh. Now that he has secured a century, India will be optimistic that Kohli can build on this momentum for the rest of the tournament.

Rohit Sharma creates record

While opening for his team, Rohit Sharma has become the sixth cricketer in the world to reach 9,000 ODI runs. Before him, this milestone was achieved by Sachin Tendulkar, Sanath Jayasuriya, Chris Gayle, Adam Gilchrist, and Sourav Ganguly. Rohit reached 9,000 ODI runs in 181 innings as an opener, surpassing Tendulkar’s previous record of 197 innings for the same achievement.

Additionally, Rohit set a new record by reaching 11,000 ODI runs during this tournament. He accomplished this feat in a match against Bangladesh, taking 261 innings to do so. For the fastest to reach 11,000 runs, Virat Kohli is in the lead, having achieved this milestone in just 222 innings.

A record-breaking day for Kohli:

In addition to his other achievements, Kohli set another record during the match against Pakistan. In the first innings, he surpassed former Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin to become the player with the most catches for India in ODIs. Before the match, Kohli was tied with Azharuddin at 156 catches, but he managed to take two catches during the game, allowing him to move ahead of the former captain.
