Mumbai Ferry Disaster Raises Maritime Safety Concerns
This latest incident comes in the wake of a devastating ferry disaster in Mumbai in December 2024. A ferry, Neelkamal, carrying 110 passengers, including children and crew, capsized near Elephanta Island after a collision with a Navy speedboat. Over 10 people, including a Naval officer, lost their lives.
In a similar tragedy today near Alibaug, another ferry disaster has resulted in multiple casualties, sparking fresh concerns over maritime safety. The Mumbai collision occurred around 6:30 pm near Uran, Karanja, when a naval speedboat undergoing sea trials lost control and crashed into the ferry. Officials later revealed that the speedboat had recently undergone an engine replacement and was being tested at the time.
A widely circulated video showed the speedboat making desperate attempts to turn away before ultimately colliding with the ferry. These repeated maritime accidents underscore the urgent need for stricter safety protocols, thorough vessel inspections, and improved navigation training to prevent further tragedies at sea.
Stay tuned for further updates on both incidents as investigations continue.
