Pune: Police, PMC Launch Drive To Remove 4,000 Abandoned Vehicles From City Roads
Pune, March 3, 2025 – The Pune Police and Municipal Corporation have launched a joint operation to remove abandoned vehicles from city roads, starting in the Kasba constituency. These vehicles, left unattended for long periods, contribute to traffic congestion, sanitation issues, and health hazards. Some are stolen, while others have no identifiable owners.
According to Additional Police Commissioner Manoj Patil, Pune has approximately 4,000 abandoned vehicles, which worsen parking problems and impact public health. Under the Police Commissioner’s orders, vehicle owners will first receive notices. If no one claims the vehicles, traffic police will seize them and proceed with legal action, including auctioning them. On the first day, 139 vehicles were removed, with all abandoned vehicles in the constituency expected to be cleared within the next 15 days.

The campaign is part of the “Clean, Beautiful, and Developed Kasba” initiative, spearheaded by MLA Hemant Rasane. The drive was inaugurated at Doodhbhatti Chowk in Ganesh Peth, attended by Additional Municipal Commissioner Prithviraj B.P., Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 1) Sandeep Singh Gill, and several local representatives.
Coordination Between Police and PMC
Municipal authorities have already removed 45 abandoned vehicles in the past month. Prithviraj B.P. stated that the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is coordinating with the police to ensure effective action. Offenders leaving vehicles on roads will face penalties, and legal processes will follow for seized vehicles. The PMC has designated a storage facility in Baner, with a new location being set up in Kondhwa for such vehicles. A similar auction process for defunct municipal vehicles is also planned.
MLA Hemant Rasane emphasized that abandoned vehicles cause cleanliness issues, traffic obstructions, and health concerns. He assured that efforts are being made to streamline legal procedures, reducing the six-month processing time for such cases. Additionally, work is underway to make Kasba constituency free from unauthorized flex boards.
