The Registration and Stamps Department in the state has extended the working hours of all Sub-Registrar Offices by two hours. This decision was made in response to the recent increase in document registrations, likely due to anticipation of a potential hike in ready reckoner rates for the upcoming financial year. The extended hours, starting today, March 3rd, aim to accommodate the higher volume of registrations and ensure efficient service delivery.

Every year on March 31st, the government sets new ready reckoner rates, which are used to determine property values for calculating stamp duty. If these rates go up, the stamp duty that citizens have to pay also increases. Because of this, many people try to complete their property registrations before the new rates take effect, especially in the last week of March. This often leads to long lines and overcrowding at Sub-Registrar Offices.

To handle the surge in registrations, Sub-Registrar Offices in major cities often stay open late into the night. Recognizing this, the department has officially extended working hours to 8:15 pm throughout March to accommodate the growing number of registrations.
