RTO Pune Expands Centres To Handle Surge In High-Security Number Plate Registrations

Pune: HSRP Mandatory for Vehicles Registered Before April 1, 2019; RTO to Halt Services from June 16 for Non-Compliant Owners
Pune, March 6, 2025 – To manage the growing demand for high-security registration plates (HSRP), the Regional Transport Office (RTO) has increased the number of registration centres from 69 to 124. Despite the extension of the HSRP deadline to April 30, officials believe that covering around 25 lakh vehicles across the state within two months remains a challenge.
In Pune district alone, over 25 lakh vehicles require the new number plates. Vehicle owners must register online, fill in their details, schedule an inspection, and pay the required fees before installation. The cost of an HSRP ranges from ₹531 to ₹879, including GST, depending on the vehicle type.
So far, 112,548 applications for HSRP have been received in Pune, with 25,043 number plates already installed. Vehicle owners have reported long waiting periods, with some appointments scheduled up to 15 to 20 days after registration.
The transport department continues to expand its facilities to streamline the process and reduce delays as the deadline approaches.
