Pune: The Pune traffic police, in collaboration with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) road department, have launched a survey to identify and improve accident-prone areas across the city. The initiative aims to enhance road safety by upgrading junctions, filling potholes, making structural modifications, and deploying personnel at 19 black spots. While these locations were previously flagged in traffic surveys, new accident-prone areas are emerging and will soon be added to the list.
In 2024, Pune recorded 1,404 road accidents, leading to 1,320 injuries and 320 fatalities. By comparison, 351 road accident deaths were reported in 2023. Authorities believe that implementing necessary infrastructural changes will help reduce these numbers.
The traffic police provide recommendations to the PMC and other road-related departments regarding required improvements. With these changes the police are anticipating reduction in risk of accidents at these spots. The goal is to ensure safer commuting for all residents, and the ongoing survey will help reassess and improve black spots in Pune. If necessary, the existing list of black spots will be updated to include additional high-risk areas.
Pune’s traffic police have been working closely with the PMC, the Public Works Department (PWD), and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to execute road safety measures. The PMC road department highlighted the ongoing coordination between civic authorities and traffic police. The executive engineers are in regular contact with traffic inspectors to address road issues across different wards. Repairs, structural modifications at junctions, and improvements at black spots are being carried out based on traffic police recommendations.
