A 70-year-old man from Indapur accidentally swallowed a bone while eating at a wedding feast. The bone got stuck in his food pipe, causing a hole in the esophagus.

As a result, he was unable to drink water or breathe properly. A team of doctors at Sassoon Hospital successfully removed the bone through endoscopy and placed a stent to heal the damaged esophagus.

The incident occurred on February 24 at a wedding in Indapur. The man experienced severe pain and was taken to multiple local hospitals over two days. However, he did not receive the required treatment.

He was then admitted to Sassoon General Hospital, where a CT scan confirmed the exact position of the bone. The bone was 5.3 cm by 3 cm in size and was stuck sideways in his esophagus. Considering his age, surgery was risky. Therefore, doctors opted for endoscopic removal.

On February 27, a team led by Dr. Padmasen Ranbagale from the Surgery Department, along with ENT specialist Dr. Rahul Thakur, anesthetists Dr. Surekha Shinde, Dr. Neha Kamble, and Dr. Sujit Kshirsagar, performed the complex procedure.

The bone was dangerously close to vital blood vessels and the heart. If left untreated, it could have worsened the hole in the esophagus, leading to a life-threatening condition. To prevent complications, doctors placed a self-expanding stent in the esophagus, which will remain for six months until complete healing.

The complex procedure was successful, and the patient was able to drink water the next day.
