Pune: Purandar MLA Vijay Shivtare has proposed a resolution to recover pending property tax from villages merged into the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). He suggested that the PMC should levy property tax at a rate double that of the earlier Gram Panchayat tax. If such a proposal is drafted, residents of these merged villages are willing to pay property tax dues dating back to 2017, Shivtare assured.

To address the various unresolved issues in the merged villages and to initiate development works, MLA Shivtare recently held a meeting with civic officials. The meeting was attended by PMC Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale, MLA Bapu Pathare, Additional Commissioner Pradeep Chandra, and heads of several PMC departments. Key concerns discussed included property tax collection, water supply, road infrastructure, drainage, waste management, and staff recruitment.

Currently, the state government has put a stay on the collection of property tax from these merged villages, resulting in revenue losses for the PMC. However, the government has indicated that the stay can be lifted if the proposed property tax is not more than twice the amount charged by the former Gram Panchayats. Shivtare supported this condition and said that residents are prepared to comply under this framework.

He further emphasized that if the property tax is calculated based on the prevailing ready reckoner rates, the tax burden could be reduced. For this, proper zoning must be implemented by the administration, he added.

Additionally, residents raised concerns over disparities in the salaries of employees who were absorbed into PMC services from Gram Panchayats. They demanded that pay and seniority should be determined from the date of joining under the Gram Panchayat system.

PMC Commissioner Dr. Bhosale assured that the state government’s directives on property tax would be implemented. Bills will be generated within two months after appointing an agency to carry out the assessment. Regarding the Gram Panchayat employees, appropriate action will be taken in line with the directives from the Divisional Commissioner.
