Pune Airport Staff Win Hearts With Thoughtful Baggage Handling System
Efforts are being made to improve passenger service at Pune Airport, with a video recently going viral showing staff carefully arranging passengers’ luggage on the conveyor belt. Social media users have widely appreciated the staff’s dedication and attention to detail.
Following frequent complaints about damaged baggage, Pune Airport authorities, in coordination with airlines, have introduced a new system to ensure luggage arrives safely at the carousel. Staff are now neatly arranging bags as soon as they appear on the conveyor, preventing them from bumping into each other or against the carousel edges. Foam-based shock absorbers are being used to soften impacts and protect the luggage.
Inspired by systems already in place at airports in Japan and Southeast Asia, this initiative is currently in the trial phase. At present, some airlines are collaborating with airport staff to implement the process effectively. The goal is to provide safer and more efficient baggage handling for travelers.
The new terminal at Pune Airport features five baggage carousels and two inline baggage handling systems. With 200 to 204 aircraft movements daily — and 210 flights handled on a recent Sunday, marking a record high — the airport is under constant pressure to manage passenger flow and services efficiently.
Officials have emphasized the need to handle luggage carefully from the aircraft to the carousel. However, challenges such as overlapping flight arrivals and limited space at carousels still pose problems. Some passengers have experienced delays in receiving their bags, sometimes waiting up to 40 minutes.
Despite these issues, the new luggage handling system is being welcomed as a positive step toward better passenger experience at Pune Airport.
