Over 3,300 Companies Set to Be Removed from Official Records Across India, Highest in Maharashtra

Firms apply for name removal under Companies Act; Maharashtra leads in voluntary exits

More than 3,300 companies across India are in the process of being struck off from official records after they submitted voluntary applications to the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. 

The Registrar of Companies (RoC) across various states and Union Territories issued public notices in April to invite objections before completing the removals, as per standard procedure under the Companies Act.

These companies applied under Section 248(2) of the Companies Act, which allows firms to request removal of their names from the register on specific grounds, including:

• Failure to commence business within one year of incorporation
• No business activity for the past two consecutive financial years

State-Wise Snapshot of Companies Seeking Removal:

• Maharashtra: Over 700 companies
• Delhi: Nearly 500 firms
• Karnataka: More than 350
• Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal: Over 200 each

This mass removal comes amid broader efforts to maintain clean corporate records and prevent inactive entities from staying listed unnecessarily.

Company Activity Overview (as of March 2025):

• Total registered companies: 28,52,449
• Active companies: 18,50,932

Top states by active companies:

• Maharashtra: 19% of active companies
• Delhi: 14%
• West Bengal: 8%

Trends:

• Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Telangana saw a rise in active company counts in March.
• Jammu & Kashmir added 143 new active companies, showing notable growth among Union Territories.
