Despite earlier claims by Pune Police that no “Koyta Gang” exists in the city, a violent incident in Bibwewadi has once again raised alarms. A disturbing CCTV video from April 17, which recently surfaced on social media, shows a group of men engaged in a brutal street fight involving sharp weapons and stone-pelting—reigniting public fear over the presence of such criminal elements in the city.

In the viral footage, a man is seen attacking another individual with a koyta (sickle) while others from both groups join in the violence by throwing stones. The victim attempts to flee but is chased, struck, and further attacked even after falling. The confrontation escalates as multiple people exchange weapons and continue the assault before both groups eventually scatter.

Bibwewadi Police have arrested four individuals in connection with the attack—Suraj Bhise, Sumit Bhise, Aditya Pawar, and Satish Pawar—all of whom reportedly have prior criminal records. Their bail applications were denied by the court, and further investigations are underway to determine the motive behind the attack.

This is not the first time such violent street gang activity has been caught on camera in Pune, despite official denials of an organized “koyta gang” presence. In February, Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar stated publicly that no such gang existed. However, repeated incidents like this have created an atmosphere of fear and growing concern among residents.

Following the viral video, NCP-Sharad Pawar MLA Rohit Pawar took to social media to criticize the state government’s inaction. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he tagged Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and Pune Guardian Minister Ajit Pawar, along with Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis, urging them to address the worsening law and order situation. “When we raised this issue in the Assembly, the government denied the existence of any koyta gang. And now, look at the terror they caused yesterday! The situation in Pune is deteriorating by the day,” Rohit Pawar wrote.

As pressure mounts on the authorities to crack down on such gangs, Pune citizens are demanding swift action and visible results to ensure public safety.
