Pune: Summer brings a variety of flavorful wild fruits to the market, and one such seasonal favorite is the black plum (Jamun). With the peak season underway, black plums—known for their tangy-sweet taste and deep purple hue—have started arriving at Pune’s Gultekdi Market Yard from Konkan, as well as other states like Gujarat and Karnataka.

Currently, the wholesale price of black plums ranges between ₹120 and ₹200 per kg, depending on quality.

For the past month, black plums from Konkan have been arriving at the Gultekdi fruit market. As of Sunday (May 11), produce from Gujarat, Karnataka, and local farms has also started reaching the market. On Sunday alone, nearly 4 to 5 tonnes of black plums were brought in for sale, with the majority coming from local farms and Gujarat.

Compared to last year, prices have increased by about 5–10%. However, recent unseasonal rainfall has slightly affected crops in Konkan and Gujarat, according to black plum trader.

Key Varieties and Features:

  • Konkan and Local Jamun: These have thin skin, are sweeter than those from Gujarat, but have a shorter shelf life. They are highly preferred within Maharashtra.
  • Gujarat and Karnataka Jamun: Slightly reddish in color, these have thicker skin, which helps them last longer. They are also quite sweet and are in high demand in Delhi markets.

High-quality black plums are now arriving in large quantities. As the season progresses, produce from Andhra Pradesh is expected to enter the market soon, which may lead to a slight dip in prices. With the onset of monsoon, the Konkan harvest will taper off, and local varieties will begin arriving in greater quantities.

Black plums have been in demand since the beginning of the season, which is expected to last around two and a half months. A substantial increase in supply from out-of-state sources is anticipated in the coming weeks.
