The much-anticipated double-decker flyover at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) Chowk is in its final stages of construction and is likely to open to the public by the end of June, according to officials from the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA). Aimed at easing the heavy traffic congestion on Ganeshkhind Road—one of Pune’s busiest arterial routes—the project has seen steady progress despite a few delays.

Originally slated for completion in May, the project was pushed to late June due to challenges in land acquisition and road widening. However, PMRDA officials confirmed that the major structural work is nearly done. All 32 supporting pillars have been erected, and the installation of massive steel girders—each 55 metres long and 18-20 metres wide—is moving ahead swiftly.

This two-tier flyover forms a critical part of the city’s larger infrastructure push, connecting key areas such as Hinjewadi and Shivajinagar, and improving traffic flow along Ganeshkhind Road, Senapati Bapat Road, Baner, Aundh, and Pashan. The structure will carry the Hinjawadi-Shivajinagar Metro line on the upper tier, while vehicular traffic will use the ramps below, offering a much-needed respite from daily traffic snarls.

Although most of the flyover is expected to be operational by June 30, work on the Pashan-side ramps is still underway and will require a couple more months to complete. In contrast, the ramps leading to Aundh and Shivajinagar are nearly finished and are expected to be opened to traffic by May 20. Utility shifting near the Baner ramp is also in its final stages.

Pillar construction has been completed at key junctions such as E-Square and Baner, streamlining the final phases of work. Earlier in the year, Shivajinagar MLA Siddharth Shirole had announced that the stretch from Bremen Circle to E-Square would open by May 1, but the opening was delayed.

As construction continues, daily commuters are grappling with increased traffic disruptions in the area, leading to frustration among residents. Many have called on the authorities to expedite the remaining work and minimize inconvenience.

Despite these setbacks, PMRDA remains confident that the main structure—excluding the Pashan ramps—will be ready and open to the public by the end of June, marking a significant milestone in Pune’s ongoing efforts to upgrade its urban infrastructure.
