Violators Beware! Pune to Use AI Technology to Curb Traffic Violations; Pilot Launched on Fergusson College Road

Pune: AI Cameras To Monitor Traffic Violations - Pilot Project Launched On Fergusson College Road
Pune gears up for AI-led traffic discipline, violators beware, the city’s roads are getting smarter!
Pune: In a major move to tackle traffic chaos and undisciplined driving, Pune Traffic Police have launched an AI-based system to monitor and penalize rule-breaking motorists. The initiative is currently being piloted on Fergusson College Road, one of the city’s busiest stretches.
The AI system, already operational at two key locations on Gopal Krishna Gokhale (Fergusson College) Road, will automatically detect traffic violations such as:
- Double parking
- Triple-seat riding on two-wheelers
- Driving through no-entry zones
- Parking on footpaths
Traffic congestion and haphazard parking have been persistent problems in Pune. The situation is especially dire on popular stretches like Fergusson Road, where affluent visitors often dine at upscale restaurants, leaving their chauffeurs to double park or occupy footpaths, further narrowing the already congested roads.
According to the police, this AI system will allow them to collect video and image-based evidence and issue fines more effectively, even for violations that currently go unchecked due to manpower constraints. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) was recently sent a formal letter explaining how this step could bring relief to citizens and enforce stricter discipline on roads.
The traffic bottleneck between Goodluck Chowk and the Fergusson College entrance has long been a hotspot for violations. Surveys have shown that a single wrongly parked vehicle can affect up to 500 vehicles per hour, causing widespread disruption.
With help from a Hyderabad-based tech firm, the AI system has been installed on a trial basis. If successful, officials plan to extend this solution citywide, allowing for enforcement action on thousands of violators daily, without additional manpower.
What the System Can Do:
- Detect how long a vehicle is stationary in a no-parking zone
- Flag vehicles driving through restricted entries
- Identify overloading or multiple riders
- Provide real-time data to issue e-challans
This AI-led crackdown is part of a larger strategy by PMC and Pune Police to implement low-cost, short-term solutions for easing urban traffic snarls.
As the city grows and traffic worsens, technology is fast becoming the frontline tool for smart, scalable, and accountable governance.
Punekars, beware, the age of unchecked traffic violations may be coming to an end. With AI watching the roads, discipline won’t just be expected, it’ll be enforced.
